When freed hostage Bar Kuperstein spoke about the torturous months in Hamas captivity, his story was heartbreaking.
He told The Jewish Chronicle (October 27, 2025) that Hamas guards beat him so severely he could not walk. What shocked him most was the excuse they gave.
“They said it was an eye for an eye,” Kuperstein said, explaining how his captors claimed revenge for something Israeli leaders had said.

But this was not justice. It was hate.
To harm a man for something spoken by another is not righteousness. It is evil. Hamas took a verse from the Torah and used it to justify cruelty, twisting Scripture to fit their violence.
In truth, “eye for eye, tooth for tooth” (Exodus 21:24) was never a command for vengeance. It was given to limit punishment and establish fairness in ancient law. It reminded Israel that justice must never go beyond the wound. Later, Jesus deepened that truth:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other also.” (Matthew 5:38–39, NIV)
Jesus was not calling for passivity. He was revealing the higher law of love that refuses to mirror hate. Hamas acts in the exact opposite spirit. Their brutality is not justice. It is desecration.
Kuperstein’s story reminds the world that Israel is confronting a force that takes God’s words and twists them into weapons. This is not about political disagreements or foreign policy. It is about the moral battle between light and darkness.
As Christian Women for Israel who love Israel, we must see this clearly. Hamas represents the distortion of everything sacred. They target civilians, glorify suffering, and use Scripture as camouflage for sin. Evil cannot be reasoned with or excused. It must be named and opposed.
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21, NIV)
Today’s Prayer
Lord, heal Bar Kuperstein and every hostage who has endured unspeakable cruelty. Bring home those still held in captivity. Strengthen the people of Israel, and silence the lies of those who twist Your Word. Let Your light break through the darkness, and may justice and truth prevail. Amen.
