What motivates Christian Zionists?

I am a Christian. And I am a Zionist. But it took me years of being both to realize that I’m a Christian Zionist. Though I consider myself a strong Christian and a committed lover of Israel, out of college I was leery of calling myself a Christian Zionist. My definition of a Christian Zionist was unclear and muddled by stereotypes I had absorbed over time. 

Where I got those stereotypes is no mystery. Any time you hear interviews with prominent Christian Zionist leaders, certain questions are guaranteed to come up: 

“Gary Bauer from American Values, tell us why evangelicals are so eager for the apocalypse?” 

“Susan Michael from International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, is church support for Israel merely a tool to convert the Jews?” 

“Earl Cox from Israel Always, do Christian Zionists only support Israel to realize the scenario of Armageddon?” 

The answers to these questions rarely matter. The question itself attempts to unm...

The Dead Sea Scrolls Monument

In 1946 or 1947—no one knows for certain—a Bedouin goatherd nicknamed Muhammad the Wolf led his flock around the cliffs lining the northwest edge of the Dead Sea. As the livestock grazed on sparse vegetation, Muhammad wandered around the boulders. According to one of several variants of the account, he hurled a stone into a cave to startle a stray goat and heard pottery shatter. Too frightened to lower himself into the cave alone, he returned several days later with at least two relatives from his Ta’amireh tribe. Though they fantasized about finding gold and silver, instead they stumbled upon a cache of oddly shaped clay vessels with bowl shaped lids. Inside one jar, they discovered three ancient leather scrolls, intact and wrapped in linen.

These are the words the angels said over the hills outside of the town of Bethlehem when they announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds.  That first Christmas is the reason we live with purpose... The precious baby in the manger was proof that God loved us.  

Experiencing a meaningful Christmas is not decorating your home, buying more gifts or taking your children or grandchildren to visit Santa. It is putting Christ first, focusing on what matters most, and then sharing that love with others. 

This Christmas celebration can be a time to be still and reflect on the love that God has for us, and then find a way to share that love with others.

Watch this short video about a remarkable little boy who, with the support of his mother, delivered both flowers and loving hugs to seniors in a local nursing home as his New Year’s resolution.  

This adorable six year old clearly understood the impact he was making on these nursing home residents, many of whom were isolated and challenged by memory issues.  He was not being coached to be “cute;” rather, he was truly joyful in presenting bouquets of flowers and hugging and kissing these grateful seniors.  One man was so touched by the kindness of this child that he gently held him in his arms and cried – and this wonderful child fully welcomed the embrace for as long as this man wanted this closeness.  

Children come into this world innocently – as blank slates - capable of learning how to love and how to hate.  What better way to teach Christ-like love by providing our children and grandchildren the opportunity to be a Mitzvah maker, making a difference to the lives of people less f...

Be Kind to Humankind Week, observed every year between Aug 25 - 31, is an annual celebration of kindness recognized globally. Every day has its own theme with a list of lovely suggestions of ways to be kind to family, friends, neighbors – even those who may consider you their enemy.

The celebration is a reminder of how simple it is to show loving kindness to another individual – be it a friend in need or a stranger you pass on the street.   The suggestions are as simple as being mindful to someone’s feelings, picking up the telephone to call a family member or friend whom you have not been in touch with for a long time, and even committing to safer driving in our busy lives.

Be Kind to Humankind Week began with two women who provided assistance to stranded boaters when no one else took the time to be bothered.  With that as a starting point, take the time to “be bothered” to provide kindness to other human beings, as taught by Christ, not just during the week of Be Kind to Humankind...
