When Influence Loses Its Way: Susan Sarandon, Scandar Copti, and the Consequences of Controversy

Sometimes, a single statement can alter the course of a career forever. Recently, Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon learned this the hard way. In remarks at a pro-Palestinian rally last November, she equated the fears faced by Jews today to what Muslims experience in the U.S., following it up with accusations of Israeli war crimes. The fallout was swift: agencies dropped her, projects disappeared, and now, Sarandon isn’t sure she’ll ever work in Hollywood again. In a recent interview, she reflected with surprise, "I’ve been used as an example of what not to do if you want to continue to work.”

Yet, Sarandon’s comments left many questioning: Did she genuinely think statements like this wouldn’t have consequences? The rally itself, where she stood alongside other activists, took an unapologetic tone as she openly criticized Israel’s response to Hamas’s October 7 attack. Months later, at another rally at Columbia University, Sarandon remained unphased by her earlier “career-ending” remarks, joining anti-Israel protesters in chants of “Columbia, you will see! Palestine will be free!”

While Sarandon’s career faces this seismic shift, it’s sadly ironic that another figure, Palestinian filmmaker Scandar Copti, is being celebrated and awarded for similar rhetoric. His recent film, Happy Holidays, which follows the lives of Israeli and Palestinian characters, won the top prize at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Accepting his award, Copti used his platform to accuse Israel of “genocide,” sparking applause. His statements went unchallenged, as did the accolades.

For Christian Women For Israel, Sarandon’s and Copti’s stories reflect a troubling trend: how antisemitism, masked as activism, is often tolerated, even celebrated. As advocates for Israel, we are reminded of the powerful influence public figures hold, which can be a gift but, when misused, can sow division and harm. In the words of Proverbs 18:21, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Words, whether from an actress or a director, can either build up or tear down, creating lasting impacts far beyond what we might anticipate.

As modern-day Esthers, let us commit to using our influence with wisdom, grace, and discernment, following Esther’s example of courage and integrity. Antisemitism should never be awarded, excused, or celebrated. Instead, we are called to uplift, to speak the truth, and to share Christ, even when voices around us stir hostility. Join us in standing for Israel and in prayer for those whose influence could be used for peace, but who choose otherwise.

And as you join us in praising the Living God for the miracle of the modern-day state of Israel, we pray youā€™ll renew your own resolve to bless Israel and the Jewish people by giving a generous gift of support.

May God bless you for being a blessing to Israel and the Jewish people
