President-elect Donald Trump has escalated international pressure on Hamas by issuing a fiery ultimatum: release all hostages held in Gaza before his January 20 inauguration or face unprecedented consequences. In a Truth Social post, Trump declared:
"If the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume Office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity."
Trump’s declaration comes as 101 hostages, including American-Israeli citizens, remain in captivity after Hamas’s deadly October 7, 2023, assault on Israel. Among the hostages is 20-year-old Edan Alexander, whose desperate plea in a Hamas propaganda video underscores the human cost of the ongoing crisis.
Hamas’s response to Trump’s ultimatum was as outlandish as it was deflective. Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, shifted Trump’s words away from their intended target, asserting:
"Hamas understands that Trump’s message is actually directed first towards Netanyahu and his government. They need to end their evil game by using negotiations as a cover for their personal political ideological interests."
This attempt to reframe Trump’s statement as a critique of Israeli leadership has been met with incredulity. While Hamas continues to use hostages as bargaining chips, it simultaneously blames Israel for obstructing potential ceasefire agreements—a narrative that rings hollow given Hamas’s rejection of multiple temporary truce offers.
The faces behind the numbers paint a heartbreaking picture. Edan Alexander, a soldier and dual citizen from New Jersey, appeared in the propaganda video pleading for his life, saying: "Every day that passes, the pain increases."
His father, Adi Alexander, has been a tireless advocate for the hostages, urging Biden, Trump, and Netanyahu to unite in their efforts. Meanwhile, the tragic story of Omer Maxim Neutra, an American-Israeli IDF tank commander whose remains are held by Hamas, reminds the world of the deep human toll. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant described Neutra’s sacrifice as emblematic of Israel’s courage and resilience.
While critics argue that Trump’s rhetoric is hyperbolic, many see it as a necessary push to prioritize hostage negotiations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Trump’s forceful words, stating, "President Trump put the emphasis in the correct place, on Hamas, and not on the Israeli government."
Netanyahu remains resolute in his dual objectives: securing the hostages’ release and dismantling Hamas’s infrastructure. Meanwhile, Trump has called for expedited action, with allies like Senator Lindsey Graham emphasizing the urgency of resolving the crisis before the presidential transition.
As Christian Women For Israel, we are called to stand with the oppressed and advocate for justice. The stories of hostages like Edan Alexander demand our prayers and our voices.
Let us lift up the hostages and their families in prayer, ask for wisdom for leaders navigating these critical negotiations, and call for an end to the suffering. Together, we echo the psalmist’s call to action: “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed” (Psalm 82:3).
And as you join us in praising the Living God for the miracle of the modern-day state of Israel, we pray you’ll renew your own resolve to bless Israel and the Jewish people by giving a generous gift of support.
May God bless you for being a blessing to Israel and the Jewish people
