As we approach the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the lessons from this dark chapter in Jewish history feel more relevant than ever. Kristallnacht, or the “Night of Broken Glass,” took place on November 9-10, 1938, when Nazi forces terrorized Jewish communities across Germany, destroying synagogues, homes, and businesses. It marked a brutal turning point in the Nazi campaign against Jews and is widely considered a prelude to the Holocaust.
In his compelling editorial, Phillip Gross reflects on today’s resurgence of antisemitism and how efforts to combat it, especially through Holocaust education, may not be enough. "Holocaust fatigue is inevitable, and there is only so long the sheer horror can meaningfully impact before the shock effect dissipates," he writes, highlighting the disconnect younger generations may feel from the atrocities of the past.
Survivors of the Holocaust, once hesitant to speak about their experiences, eventually became central to educating the world on the dangers of hatred. Yet, while these efforts succeeded in raising awareness, Gross suggests that the focus on Jewish victimhood has reached a point where it may be losing its power. "The tragic events have taken on an almost distant, surreal quality," Gross notes, and there is a need to shift the narrative toward Jewish pride and resilience.
The editorial calls for a renewed focus on Jewish identity—not as victims, but as a people who have overcome tremendous adversity and built a thriving future. Gross suggests that while remembering the Holocaust remains crucial, it's time to teach future generations about the strength, achievements, and legacy of the Jewish people.
As Christian Women For Israel, this message is one we can deeply resonate with. We are called to stand with the Jewish people not only in remembrance of their suffering but in celebration of their resilience, faith, and identity. The recent rise of antisemitism is a deadly reminder of the need for vigilance. It is also a call to share the stories of Jewish strength and resilience.
A Prayer for Modern-Day Esthers
Lord, we pray for the protection of the Jewish people as they face rising antisemitism. Help us to stand in solidarity with them, honoring their resilience and their legacy. May we remember their past suffering, but also uplift their strength and dignity. Amen.
And as you join us in praising the Living God for the miracle of the modern-day state of Israel, we pray you’ll renew your own resolve to bless Israel and the Jewish people by giving a generous gift of support.
May God bless you for being a blessing to Israel and the Jewish people
