As violence escalated on the streets of Amsterdam following a soccer game between Maccabi Tel Aviv and AFC Ajax, one man, Melhem Asad, stood out as a beacon of bravery. An Israeli-Druze fan from the town of Kisra-Sumei in Israel’s Upper Galilee, Melhem had come to support his team, but he left as a true hero—risking his life to save fellow Israelis from the brutality of mob attacks.
In an interview with Israeli media, Melhem recounted the chilling details of that night. "Before the game, we were at Dam Square, and there was good security," he shared. "But after the game ended, we left the stadium to return to the hotel, and there was no security—nothing. We felt completely exposed." He described how, without police protection, they became easy targets for groups intent on causing harm.
What Melhem did next exemplifies courage and quick thinking. Hearing groups nearby speaking in Arabic about their plans to attack Israeli fans, he acted fast. “I heard people across the street speaking Arabic and scheming on how and where to attack the Israeli fans,” he said. Thinking on his feet, Melhem started speaking Arabic himself, convincing the attackers that the Israelis had already left. He then ran through nearby restaurants and streets, warning Israelis to hide their Maccabi shirts and avoid speaking Hebrew.
“I feel that God sent me at the right moment and to the right place to save those I could,” Melhem said, deeply moved by the night’s events. This display of selflessness is reminiscent of the spirit of modern-day Esthers—individuals who stand boldly to protect others, regardless of the danger to themselves. In a world where hatred can feel overpowering, stories like Melhem’s remind us of the impact of courage and faith in the face of evil.
For Christian Women For Israel, Melhem’s heroism serves as a poignant reminder that each of us has a role to play in protecting God’s people. Just as Esther stood in the gap for her people, we too are called to be vigilant, prayerful, and prepared to act when our time comes.
Let’s honor Melhem Asad’s bravery and continue to pray for those who face hostility and hatred. May his actions inspire us to be courageous and steadfast in our commitment to Israel and the Jewish people.
And as you join us in praising the Living God for the miracle of the modern-day state of Israel, we pray you’ll renew your own resolve to bless Israel and the Jewish people by giving a generous gift of support.
May God bless you for being a blessing to Israel and the Jewish people
