In a heart-wrenching video released by Hamas, 20-year-old Edan Alexander appeared gaunt but resolute, pleading for his release after enduring over 420 days in captivity. Taken hostage during Hamas’s brutal October 7, 2023, attack, Alexander is one of 101 remaining hostages still held in Gaza. His story serves as a vivid reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the urgent need for action.
A Young Hero with Roots in Israel and America
Born in Israel and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Edan Alexander embodies the deep bond between the United States and Israel. After graduating high school in 2022, Alexander returned to Israel to serve as a lone soldier in the Golani Brigade. On that fateful October morning, he was stationed near Gaza, where Hamas’s assault claimed over 1,200 lives and left the region reeling in devastation.
In the video, Alexander addressed both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, pleading for decisive action. Speaking in English, he urged Trump: “Use your influence and the full power of the United States to negotiate for our freedom.” His words underscore the dire need for moral leadership and swift intervention.
A Mother’s Agony and Resolve
Edan’s mother, Yael Alexander, has become a beacon of strength and determination for her son and the other hostages. Speaking at a rally in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, she expressed her anguish: “This is not a Hollywood movie. This is a bad dream we have been living for 421 days.”
Despite her heartbreak, Yael shared a glimmer of hope, recounting a call from Netanyahu promising that the conditions were “ripe” to secure the hostages’ release. “Edan speaks for all the living hostages who cannot make their voices heard,” she declared, urging leaders to rise above political divisions and act decisively to bring them home.
A Call to Action for Modern-Day Esthers
As Christian Women For Israel, we are called to respond with faith and action during times of crisis. Edan’s story is not only a call for justice but also a testament to the resilience of the Jewish people. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 82:3-4: “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy.”
A Cry for Freedom Amid Psychological Warfare
Hamas’s propaganda videos are cruel tactics designed to manipulate emotions, but they also serve as undeniable proof that hostages like Edan are alive and desperate for rescue.
Edan’s plea was both heartbreaking and hopeful: “Fear and isolation are killing us. Do not forget us.” His mother’s rallying cry summed up the collective plea of hostage families: “Be strong, like my Edan who has survived for so long. Be strong.”
Edan Alexander’s story calls on us to act—through prayer, advocacy, and support. His voice, though captive, continues to remind us of the enduring spirit of the Jewish people and the importance of unwavering faith.
Stand with Israel. Pray for Edan. Advocate for justice.
