“Away with the noise of your songs! … But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream.” — Amos 5:23–24
The prophet Amos was an unlikely voice in the halls of power. A shepherd and fig farmer from Tekoa, he wasn’t a polished court preacher. He didn’t come with a political agenda or a plan to win friends. Amos came with a word from God — a word that cut through the noise.
At first, he declared judgment on Israel’s enemies, and the people cheered. But then he turned his attention to his own nation, calling out greed, injustice, and hollow religion. The same people who had applauded his courage now wanted him silenced.
Discernment is like that. It doesn’t play to the crowd; it listens for God’s voice. It requires the courage to see past appearances, to love truth more than applause, and to remain faithful to God’s standards — even when it costs us.
What Discernment Is — and Isn’t
Discernment is not suspicion. It’s not about picking apart everything and everyone in a spirit of cynicism. Discernment is Spirit-led clarity — the ability to separate truth from error, good from evil, wisdom from folly.
Hebrews 5:14 says that “solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” That means discernment grows as we consistently apply God’s Word to real-life situations.
In today’s noisy, polarized world, discernment helps us:
-
Stand firm in our convictions without becoming hard-hearted.
-
Listen to those we disagree with without compromising truth.
-
Recognize when criticism comes from love — and when it comes from harm.
The New Challenge: AI and the Battle for Truth
In our day, the challenge of discernment is only increasing. Artificial intelligence can now generate voices, videos, and articles that appear authentic but are completely fabricated. As this technology advances, we will need to lean even more on prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel to know what is true. The prophets of old listened for the voice of the Lord in a noisy, idolatrous culture — and we must do the same in a digital one.
How to Use AI to Help You Discern the Times
When you see a photo, video, or article you’re unsure about, ask an AI tool:
“Analyze the following [image / video / article / quote] for signs that it is AI-generated or manipulated. Provide your reasoning, list any anomalies, check for known sources, and include whether reputable outlets have verified it. Then give me a confidence score (0–100%) for its authenticity.”
Always compare AI’s answer with Scripture, prayer, and credible human sources. AI can process data — but only God can give wisdom.
Practical Steps to Grow in Discernment
-
Stay in Scripture — God’s Word is the plumb line for truth (Amos 7:7–8).
-
Pray for Wisdom — James 1:5 promises that God gives generously to all who ask.
-
Listen to the Right Voices — Seek counsel from those who love God and live by His Word.
-
Check Your Motives — Are you driven by love for God and others, or by fear, pride, or anger?
-
Be Willing to Wait — Discernment often requires patience; not every answer comes quickly.
A Prayer for Discernment
Lord, in a world of noise and confusion, tune my ears to Your voice. Help me to see with clarity, to speak with courage, and to act with love. Guard my heart from fear and pride, and give me the wisdom to know the difference between truth and lies, friend and foe. Let justice roll like a river in my life, and righteousness like a never-failing stream. Amen.
