Modern-Day Esthers: Embracing Silence to Hear God’s Voice

We often speak boldly about using our voices as Modern-Day Esthers to advocate, pray, and stand for what is right. But in our passionate pursuit to speak out, do we sometimes forget to stop and simply listen? Have we taken the time lately to hear from God?

In the story of Samuel (1 Samuel 3:1-19), we see a powerful example of someone who heard clearly from God because he intentionally embraced silence and practiced disciplines that positioned him to hear God’s voice. Samuel’s experience teaches us three vital lessons on hearing God in the midst of life’s noise:

1. Serve Faithfully

Samuel served God diligently, even before fully knowing Him personally (1 Samuel 3:7). He ministered faithfully, performing tasks in the temple without fanfare or recognition. Modern-Day Esthers, we too must serve diligently in areas God has clearly outlined for us—generosity, prayer, community involvement—without needing direct, specific prompting. When we faithfully serve in these simple acts, we position ourselves to hear more personal, intimate messages from God.

Reflect on Verse: "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people." (Ephesians 6:7)

2. Cultivate Solitude

Ironically, to break the silence and clearly hear God’s voice, we must intentionally enter silence. Samuel was alone in the quiet temple when God spoke to him. Silence and solitude, free from distractions, allowed Samuel to hear God’s whisper.

As Modern-Day Esthers, solitude might seem daunting. Our busy lives and active advocacy leave little room for quiet moments. But solitude is precisely where God often speaks loudest. It’s not easy—our inner doubts and anxieties surface quickly—but in that quiet space, we truly confront our hearts and allow God’s voice to heal, encourage, and direct.

Reflect on Verse: "Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

3. Surrender Completely

Samuel’s immediate response, "Speak, Lord, your servant is listening," shows his full surrender to God's direction, no matter how challenging the message. Modern-Day Esthers, surrender means laying down our own will, comfort, and preferences, trusting God’s perfect purpose and plan.

When Samuel surrendered completely, God entrusted him with significant, kingdom-building responsibilities. Likewise, when we surrender our plans, pride, and comforts to God, He speaks clearly, entrusting us with greater purposes.

Reflect on Verse: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Modern-Day Esthers, we are called to speak up boldly—but also to listen carefully. Like Samuel, let’s commit to faithful service, intentional solitude, and complete surrender. When we do, God will shatter our silence with His life-giving voice, guiding us clearly in our sacred calling.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to faithfully serve, intentionally seek solitude, and fully surrender my heart to You. Speak, Father, for Your servant is listening. Amen
