Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader responsible for launching the deadly attack on Israel in October 2023, believed he was setting the stage for a decisive battle that would reshape the Middle East and, in his mind, lead to the downfall of the Jewish state. However, his plan did not unfold as expected. Instead of breaking Israel, Sinwar's gambit has led to massive devastation for Gaza and Lebanon, the loss of thousands of lives, and the strengthening of Israel’s military resolve.
The attack led to the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, but Israel’s military response has been swift and unrelenting. As the Wall Street Journal notes, “Instead of facing a concerted attack from its foes, Israel has managed to go after them sequentially,” targeting Hamas in Gaza and later Hezbollah in Lebanon. This has drastically weakened the Iranian-led “axis of resistance,” a coalition that Sinwar had hoped would unite to bring Israel to its knees.
One of the most significant consequences of this conflict is how it has set back the Palestinian cause. Far from advancing Palestinian statehood, Sinwar’s actions have only made those aspirations more remote. As Emile Hokayem, a Middle East security expert, told the WSJ, “Despite the defeat of the resistance movements, the resistance mindset has not been neutralized—also because now there is more to resist against.” The failed gambit has left Palestinians facing greater isolation, and Israel's regional partnerships remain intact, with Arab countries like Saudi Arabia continuing diplomatic engagements.
What is clear now is that Sinwar underestimated Israel’s resilience. The WSJ article highlights how Israel, with support from the U.S., is now preparing for further military action, including potential strikes on Iranian targets. The article observes, “Sinwar’s Oct. 7 plan has resulted in catastrophic devastation for Gaza and horrendous suffering by ordinary Palestinians,” but it has also exposed the fragility of the Palestinian leadership and Sinwar’s miscalculation in provoking such a powerful response from Israel.
For Christian Women For Israel, this story is a reminder of the strength Israel draws from its history of overcoming great challenges. Much like Esther’s intervention saved the Jewish people in ancient times, Israel’s current resilience is a testament to the enduring power of faith and determination. In the face of Sinwar’s violent plans, Israel has not only survived but has become stronger. It’s a powerful reminder to continue praying for Israel’s safety and standing in solidarity with the Jewish people as modern-day Esthers.
