Jehovah Shalom, The Lord Is Peace

Key Scripture:
“So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace.”
Judges 6:24, NIV

Peace did not come to Gideon when life was calm. It came when the land was troubled, the future felt uncertain, and fear had already settled into the hearts of many. That is important for us to remember.

When Gideon called the Lord Jehovah Shalom, he was not standing in the middle of an easy season. He was standing in a moment that looked unstable. Yet right there, in the middle of anxiety and weakness, God revealed Himself as peace.

Christians also see a beautiful connection between this name and the words of Jesus. In the New Testament, Jesus does not simply offer peace as a gift; He identifies Himself as its source. He told His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” John 14:27. The peace Gideon experienced when he encountered the Lord is the same peace Jesus promised to those who follow Him. What God revealed about Himself as Jehovah Shalom, Jesus fulfills as the One who brings God’s peace directly into our lives.

That means peace is not merely the absence of conflict. Peace is the presence of God.

How often do we wait for the headlines to settle down, the family burden to lift, or the pressure in our own hearts to ease before we believe we can live in peace? But Scripture shows us something better. The Lord does not ask us to find peace on our own. He reveals Himself as peace.

For those of us who love Israel, this name reaches us in a tender way. We watch a land so precious to God endure pain, threats, grief, and tension. We pray for Jerusalem. We ask the Lord to defend His people. We ask Him to comfort the fearful, strengthen the weary, and bring righteousness where evil has pressed in. And as we pray for the peace of Jerusalem, we are also reminded that true peace begins with Him.

The peace of God is not shallow. It is not denial. It is not pretending everything is fine when it is not. It is steadiness in the middle of real trouble. It is confidence that the God of Israel has not stepped away from His promises. It is the quiet assurance that the Lord still reigns.

Maybe today you need that reminder in your own life. Perhaps your heart feels stirred up by world events, burdened by someone you love, or tired from carrying too much. Then let this name meet you personally: Jehovah Shalom. The Lord is peace. Not just peace-giver. Peace itself.

So today, do not just ask God for peace. Call upon Him as peace.

He is still the One who meets frightened people.
He is still the One who speaks into troubled places.
He is still the One who steadies trembling hearts.

And He is still watching over Israel.

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, You are Jehovah Shalom. Be peace over Israel, peace over anxious hearts, peace over places of grief, and peace over all that feels unsettled in me today. Teach me to rest not in circumstances, but in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
