True Hero: How an Israeli-Druze Saved Lives During the Amsterdam Pogrom

As violence escalated on the streets of Amsterdam following a soccer game between Maccabi Tel Aviv and AFC Ajax, one man, Melhem Asad, stood out as a beacon of bravery. An Israeli-Druze fan from the town of Kisra-Sumei in Israel’s Upper Galilee, Melhem had come to support his team, but he left as a true hero—risking his life to save fellow Israelis from the brutality of mob attacks.

In an interview with Israeli media, Melhem recounted the chilling details of that night. "Before the game, we were at Dam Square, and there was good security," he shared. "But after the game ended, we left the stadium to return to the hotel, and there was no security—nothing. We felt completely exposed."
